Test Types

There are two types of IELTS:

Academic Module

This version is typically required for those who wish to study at universities or colleges in English-speaking countries or for professionals who want to work in fields like medicine or engineering.

General Training Module

This version is often required for immigration purposes, as well as for vocational training or work experience in English-speaking countries.

Which IELTS test type is right for me

If you want to move to an English-speaking country to study, then you should take the IELTS Academic test.

For work or immigration, the IELTS General Training test is recommended.

IELTS Test

Listening : In this area, your comprehension of conversations and solo speeches in spoken English is assessed.

Reading : You'll be evaluated on your ability to comprehend and analyze written materials as part of a reading comprehension test.

Writing :There are two writing assignments for you to finish in this section. In the Academic version, you will describe a graph or table in a brief essay. Writing a letter and an essay are required for the General Training edition.

Speaking : The speaking test evaluates your ability to successfully communicate in spoken English through a one-on-one interview with an examiner.

The test is divided into four categories:

Listening 30 min (plus 10 min transfer time)
Reading 60 minutes
Writing 60 minutes
Speaking 11-14 minutes
Total Test Time 2 hrs and 45 min

Scoring

IELTS uses a nine-band scoring system, with Band 1 (Non-User) being the lowest and Band 9 (Expert User) being the highest. The average of your ratings in each of the four parts will be your band score overall. Note: There is no pass or fail in IELTS.
